Five years.

At the end of the day five years ago today, when I was still teaching high school, I penned this brief entry in my personal handwritten diary. I didn't feel like writing much but I reproduce it here anyway. Perhaps others can reproduce their thoughts from that day.

I was a senior that day, and I'm pretty sure they dulled it down in the school....I had no idea that it had happened until a couple hours after, and I wasn't even able to get anywhere near a TV until last period, around 2:00, and then at home.

It's frightening that everybody remembers where they were at that point. And you probably wanted to help in any way possible, but it was just impossible. And as I look out my window here at work and see the American flag flying at half-staff, I can't help but think about the number of lives lost on that fateful day, 5 years ago.

I was in Rome. I was worried that it might be the Beginning of the End and that I'd be stranded a continent away from most of my loved ones. At 7 p.m. the Romans switched all their public televisions from the Twin Tower coverage to discussion of the big game -- Roma v. Real Madrid.

It was a weird feeling -- I was experiencing the apocalypse and for other people it was an incidental foreign crisis which didn't interrupt their pleasure in sport.
