If someone were to ask me point blank whether I believe in fate or that someone would be thwarted for self-confidence (in the ancient Greek version of hubris), I would say no, but I try my best not to tempt fate anyway. When I was pregnant with Florence, we turned down an offer of a baby shower and we obtained only absolute necessities (car seat, diaper changing stuff, a few small garments and blankets) before she was born, for fear of jinxing a good outcome. I was a little startled when I read "The Kid" by Dan Savage to see that he had similar feelings, and that his mother claimed it was a common fear. There is a jokey tradition not to take the photo of the peal band before an attempt. Stuff like that. So your first sentence sentence above makes me frantic at a gut level. I'm a big fan of advance planning, though, and hope everything goes well.
