Recently Anna and I were fantasizing about what to do when we retire. The possibility of sailing the world in a yacht came up since we both love to travel. We idly guessed that buying a medium-sized yacht would cost between 500,000 and a million or so and placed it in the "maybe someday" category ( Read more... )

Good luck. People do a lot of sailing around here, and there are sailing classes near our house and in Annapolis as well.

Sailing vessels take a lot of work to keep in good repair. A member of the local sailing community who has been part of the sailing club for a couple of years was out this spring helping get the club boats in shape.

T's father has some sort of boat with a group of four to eight other people. This allows them to buy a nicer boat than they would buy individually, and it helps with the maintenance costs.

This guy in California writes about issues involving early retirement. He also writes about a yacht, and I think he wrote about getting one for free at some point, but it is too early for me to actually figure out if/when he wrote that. But you may be interested in reading some of his relevant entries. He also writes about having a Ph.D. in physics but being a freelance writer and living in an RV with his woman and his dog which I guess puts the EXTREME in Early Retirement Extreme.

The two happiest days of a boat owner's life are the day he buys his boat and the day he sells his boat -- that's the old adage I know. But, it could work very well if you are committed to it.

I must admit that sounds really awesome, and I'll probably ask you about contacting him in a few months (I'll try to gain some experience through the club first so that I don't embarrass you).

Do you know what island he's on?
