Recently Anna and I were fantasizing about what to do when we retire. The possibility of sailing the world in a yacht came up since we both love to travel. We idly guessed that buying a medium-sized yacht would cost between 500,000 and a million or so and placed it in the "maybe someday" category.
Anyway, a few weeks ago the thought crossed my mind while working and I searched for how much yachts cost. I was extremely surprised to learn that 20' sailing vessels in Hawai'i average about $10,000 - and pretty nice 48' vessels can go for as little as $89,000.
As we currently live on the big island of Hawai'i, I'm excited about the idea that we could potentially buy a medium-sized sailing vessel for $30,000 (the cost of a new car) and cruise the islands.
The problem, of course, is that I know absolutely nothing about sailing (and Anna tells me "you first").
But the idea that this is something that we could do in the next 5-10 years rather than 30 has led me to search for sailing lessons. While doing so, I came across the
Hawaii Yacht Club which offers Sailing 101 classes each month. They cost $50 a year to join and hold a novice sailing day once a month.
The first class will be next Sunday. I'll let you know how it goes.
