70s vs 80s Fashion

I was doing some research on the fashion of the 70s, and watched this 1970s video compilation:

In watching it, I started out thinking "Hell yeah, the '70s were rocking!" Somewhere around 1976 though, it becomes obvious that the people of the '70s are losing their way. By the late '70s it was a little painful ( Read more... )

I was thinking that there was no edge to the music in the late 70s. For whatever reason (Vietnam, Carter, whatever), there was very little "rebellion" in the music. Perhaps some of the punk scene began filtering over from Britain around '80, but its obvious rebellion became a part of music again around then.

You can also see rebellion lost again from music toward the end of the '80s. To me grunge is a reaction/rebellion from the corporate friendly power ballads of the late '80s.

True enough. I'm not surprised there was bleed or non-pop hit music out there. But I think there was a definite shift in the mainstream fashion around that time to things that would still be considered cool. Or perhaps what I consider "cool" is just defined by that period and youngsters today would view both as strange.

In any case, I would probably exclude Pink Floyd as they were more of a British band (as far as their fashion influence went). Similarly I'd probably exclude the Beatles and the Sex Pistols.
