Ooh, good question!

More Gaeta and Zarek.

I know they were a plotline of convenience, but I really wish we'd seen more of their interactions a little earlier. Zarek was VP on New Caprica. Felix was pres. aide. They interacted. I would have liked to see a taste of their relationship there. I would have liked to see how Zarek reacted to having to put Felix's name on his list, and then how he reacted to Felix being the source. I would have liked to see some indication of what their relationship was before Felix came to him in Disquiet.

More Gaeta and Hoshi.

Again, it didn't have to be big. But would it have killed them to put them into the show? (Or Gaeta/Narcho, if they'd wanted to go that way. Because I'll tell ya, "shooting in Montreal" was NOT a euphemism for "Sebastian Spence won't play gay characters.") But it would have been nice to have Gaeta's love life not be an afterthought.

(And I still maintain that you could fix both of these problems by Making Gaeta the lead in The Woman King.)

You know, I've wondered myself about Zarek and Gaeta's relationship on New Caprica. Surely they must have bonded over Gaius becoming a utter mess of a president during The Missing Year. You have often said how they're both idealists, and I think that must have come out at some point when Baltar checked out, if not before, during the planning of NC. If indeed they became close on NC as they ought to have, I can't believe that it wasn't difficult for Zarek to put him on that list. I would have liked to see some of the repercussions of that come out when they had their talk in "Disquiet ( ... )

I would have liked to see a scene in which people talk about how pilots get promoted while Gaeta isn't. I'm perfectly happy with unfairness - unfairness makes for great conflict - but for that to work, it has to be on screen. Not just in the minds of some geeks who've thought about the show for too long. And with that, I mean us. ;)

On general principle, most of Gaeta's story happened off screen, which is kinda ridiculous, thinking about it. But! It's probably the only reason why Gaeta is one of the few characters to survive the show being still coherent and intact.

Right, enough bashing. All true though.

Oh, interesting. I like how you're okay with non-promotion, just not what not talking about it.

some geeks who've thought about the show for too long.

Who, moi?

That's a good point about Gaeta's story happening off screen. Now that I think about it, that sort of casts the webisodes in a rather annoying light.

Yes, all true. But having watched other sci-fi shows, there's always a Gaeta on the bridge who usually never gets nearly as much story as Felix did. AJ either was a really smooth talker in the writers' room or he got very lucky.

Welll, yes, but most sci-fi shows don't have a Cally or a Leoben or three Sharons at all. So I think that can be put in perspective.

Good point about the lack of background. Like they could have even thrown it in during his speech about his childhood in BOTS.

Yeah, I was just saying in the previous comment upthread that given that a lot of Felix's story tended to be off camera, it kind of casts the webisodes into a kind of annoying light.

It was pretty horrifying the way some of the fandom turned on Gaeta. And showed a general lack of complexity I'm not used to seeing in the BSG fandom.

Heh, yeah. Although as I remember, it was the Kara people who showed the most vitriolic hatred for Gaeta, even less so than the Roslin folks. Not exactly sure why, given that she was the one who kicked him like a dog in "Collaborators" and showed absolutely no remorse about it ever. Maybe it was because the Mutiny coincided with Kara actually have a role like the old days? Maybe because the mutiny got Sam shot? But it's not like Gaeta went out and personally shot Sam, despite the fact that the reverse happened - again with absolutely no apology ever. Well, I will grant that at least Sam was remorseful about it.

Oh and yeah, he saved them 238+ times.

Clearly I've left all this bitterness behind and have moved on. :P

I keep going back and forth here- more screen time would be nice, but if he'd gotten as much screen time as the regular characters, would he be as much fun to fic?

That said, I think his silly little scene with Dee shouldn't have been cut. And some scene that establishes their friendship early on, like season 1, would have been nice.

I absolutely agree with you about more friendship scenes between him and Dee. Did that scene where he's giving her the third degree about her date with Billy a real scene or was that a deleted one? Anyway, more like that one would have been nice.

"I did not get laid, Sir?", that one? I think that was a deleted scene as well.

I really would have liked more on New Caprica before the Cylons came exploring his relationship with both Baltar and Zarek. Also, after more during the occupation exploring his role within the administration - how did he have access to the information - really I don't see them leaving the jamming frequencies just lying around somewhere ( ... )

Yes, I too would have liked to have seen the three of them working together on New Caprica. I know that they probably felt they couldn't afford Richard Hatch for too many episodes, but come on: some flashbacks during "Unfinished Business" couldn't have been too expensive, right? I really would like to know how the three of them got along. Also, Zarek's explanation of why he'd been in jail all that time during the Occupation didn't entirely make sense to me, because we didn't see him during the surrender, so clearly, he must have been in jail already, and yet, didn't he say that Baltar jailed him because he wouldn't submit to the Cylons? Like seriously, when would Baltar have had time to escort Zarek to jail before the Cylons showed up in Colonial One?Incidentally, your comment makes me glad that I included a bit of Zarek, Baltar and Gaeta interaction in my exchange fic for you ( ... )

I think that can be explained away with the fact that in the BSG universe, vice presidents are just never present when something important happens. Except if they're Baltar. Strange as that is.
