Chapter 2
The next morning Callie woke up at 6:30 am. As she opened her eyes she wondered what had made her wake up in the first place. A mad voice over at the sink gave her the answer:
“Damn fucking piece of shit!”
“What did I do Yang?” Callie said, still half asleep on the couch.
“Not you knocked-up, the coffee-machine”
Callie laughed as she opened her eyes, only to see Cristina looking outraged by the coffee-maker.
“Seriously Yang? You rock at cardio-surgery but you can’t figure out how to make coffee?”
“Stop talking woman”
“I’ll make your coffee Yang, “ Callie said as she got out of bed ”Just accept that there are things you suck at”
“Suck? Did you seriously just say that I *suck*?”
“You know what, that’s the way it sounded to my ears as well!” Callie put on a faked shocked look.
“This pregnancy-thing has totally turned you into McBitch”
Callie gasped as she looked at Cristina.
“Yeah, that’s your new name - get used to it”
“Shut up and take a shower Yang, you’re running late”
“Okay, the mom thing? - Not cute. If you need someone to practice your parental skills on I would think that ‘daddy to be’ is a great choice. I’m sure he’s down with it. After all - the hunters did shoot Bambi’s mom”
“I’m not doing the mom thing” Callie said laughing “It’s the superior resident thing”
“Oh you just love to pull that superior crap on me don’t you?”
“Totally”
“Whatever McBitch”
“The shower, Yang. Now!”
Callie could hear Cristina’s foul mouth in the shower all the way through the livingroom.
She grinned and thought to herself that Cristina’s unconventional care was exactly what she needed right now.

A couple of hours later Callie was standing at the nurses station filling out charts as George walked up to her.
“Hey there” He said with a huge grin.
“Good morning Dr. O’Malley” Callie said staring down at the paper she was filling out.
“Dr, O’Malley? I’m Dr. O’Malley now?”
“Oh, I’m sorry did I get this wrong? Callie turned around and faced him, looking at the monogram at his lab coat “I guess that the white coat that says “George O’Malley MD” had me thinking that you in fact where “Dr. O’Malley””
“I thought that you….I mean you told me that you had to let go, and that made me feel so great - to know that we could talk to each other you know?”
“Okay George, two things; One: I have let go. Two: We’re talking”
“Then why are you distancing yourself from me?”
“Oh come on George, can we just stop doing this?” Callie said and tried to make it sound as if she was more annoyed than touched by his attempt to get close to her again.
“Doing what?”
“THIS! I’m doing the best I know how to do okay? Just don’t expect me to be your pal and ask you how your model girlfriend is doing.”
“She’s not my girlfriend anymore”
“ENOUGH GEORGE! I don’t want to hear about your sad love life okay?” Callie could no longer hold back the tears that had been burning behind her eyelids all morning. She turned around and started to walk away from him but he was right behind her and grabbed her arm, forcing her to turn around.
“Callie” George whispered her name so softly that her defense fell to the ground. “Callie baby, why are you doing this? Why are you trying so hard to keep this distance between us?”
“You really want me to tell you?” Callie said as her voice broke.
“Yes, please…”
Callie continued in a state of anger and raw emotional pain
“I’m pregnant, okay? I’m pregnant and scared to death that I can’t stop loving the man who destroyed everything in me”
George felt as though his world had stopped, and only one thing to say came to mind
“Is it mine?”
“Go straight to hell George”
Callie turned around and walked away from him, leaving him standing there more confused than ever before.
------------------------
Callie didn’t notice the person following her until she got inside the residents locker room.
“Hey, hey, hey, hey….” Mark called for Callie as he grabbed her into his arms.
“Let go of me Mark” Callie said and struggled to break free.
“No, I won’t. Not until you tell me what the idiot did this time to make you cry”
“Why are you assuming that *he* did something?”
“Because he just can’t help his little dumbass self”
Callie laughed
“How do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“Make me laugh through my tears.”
“It comes naturally, what can I say?”
Callie buried her face in Mark’s chest
“Oh God, I don’t know how to handle this Mark”
“You can start by telling me what’s wrong” he said while stroking her soft hair.
“I’m pregnant”
“Shit!” Mark looked genuinely surprised.
“Tell me about it” Callie said as she leaned back and faced him.
“Does he know?”
“I just told him”
“How did he react?”
“He questioned if he was the father”
“Oh please make my day and tell me that he’s not?”
“Can’t do that. There’s no other candidate available.”
“So, the passing out yesterday? The sore back……. it was all about tadpole here?” Mark said as he smiled and gently placed his hand on Callie’s lower stomach.
“Mark Sloan, did you just call my child a frog?” Callie laughed
“I did, but don’t worry. With any luck she won’t look anything like her dad, the toad”
“She?”
“God can’t be cruel enough to make a George O’Malley junior and place it inside your gorgeous body - it’s a girl, I just know it” He said grinning.
“How do you do this?”
“Do what?”
“Make me feel so good about something that’s really hard for me to accept.”
“The baby?”
Callie nodded
“Just a few months ago I dreamed of the day I would get to tell George that I was carrying his baby”
“And how do you feel about it now that it’s actually happening?”
Callie sighed and took a deep breath.
“Confused, scared, heartbroken….and strangely enough now that I’m talking to you about it: happy.” She said smiling at him.
“You should” Mark nodded “No matter what; this is *your* baby Callie”
“You know, Addison told me the exact same thing last night”
“Well in that case, be a good little ortho and please listen to us”
“I will. I mean…..I am. This is *my* baby”
Neither one of them noticed Izzie standing at the other side of the wall - listening to every word they said.
