Stop what you're doing!!!

Go back up your files!

Yes, right now.

I mean it!

The Internet will still be there when you're finished.
We all know we should do this regularly, but how many actually do? If your hard drive suddenly decides to commit suicide, will you be trying to kick your own @ss, as I am, for losing everything? Or will you only have to recreate a small portion ( Read more... )

We have learned that the hard way ourselves. We now have an iomega external hard drive which we keep on the table with our laptops, and every week or so we back up the laptops. I'm a bit paranoid, so I also keep all fic files backed up on a CD, and my in-progress folder is also on my memory stick. Overkill, I'm sure, but at least when I drop off my laptop to get the hinges repaired tomorrow, I know that if it gets wiped I have a copy of my entire hard drive backed up.

I *know* better, and every now and then I say, "I really should back up my files," but I just don't. You'd think I'd have learned last year, when something similar happened. (It was just the power supply that time, but the folks at the service center - the one they send it to if there's more than one thing wrong with it - wiped the hard drive as a matter of course. Bastards.)

We have a spare desktop lying around that we really should get rid of, as it needs a new motherboard. What I really need to do is put a new board in it, then set it up as a server to do automatic backups of both our computers. Auto is the way to go.

We bought the Iomega hard drive thru ecost, and I want to say it was about $175. We tend to use the dining room table as our computer area, so the hard drive sits on the table, and we just plug it into our laptops.

I leave all the computer innards to my husband. He had replaced motherboards, installed extra memory, etc. One of the laptops keeps fading out, so now we have purchased a replacement part for the screen but have yet to actually try fixing it.

My laptop has hinges that have mostly cracked thru. I just backed up the entire system in case they replace it rather than actually fixing it. This is one of the few things I'm glad we bought an extended warranty on.

Yes, I'm very glad for the extended warranty. I got the three-year option, so I've got one more year to go. It's been well worth the cost. I figured after three years I would want to replace it anyway, technology advances being what they are.

Is it that your hard drive is fried or do you think it might be a problem with the power supply? I ask because there are these things that allow you to remove your hard drive from your computer and hook it up to another one as though it were an external drive. Then the files can be copied from there to the computer it's hooked up to, then transfered to the new computer. Your local computer fixit guy might have the gadget that does this... good luck! *hugs*

Unfortunately, it is the drive itself. I was using it Monday night, when suddenly there came a knocking sound from beneath, and everything but my cursor arrow stopped responding. I shut it down and went to bed. In the morning, it wouldn't even boot - "Operating system not found ( ... )

Okay, I have my computer back now, with its shiny new (blank) hard drive. Could you perhaps send me back the template and sample file I sent you after The Witching Hour? I had done some tweaking since then, but at least I wouldn't have to start from scratch.

The worst part is, of course, that I have nobody to blame but myself. And all my lovingly-archived fanfics... pfffft! Gone! :'(

I came to wish you happy birthday, but it appears you've long since left LJ. Hope you have a good day, anyway.

I haven't actually left LJ, I just haven't been able to get myself to post anything. I tried to jump-start my posting by signing up for a fic exchange, but to my shame I ended up as one of those who flaked out and had to be replaced by a pinch-hitter at the last minute, as I never finished the story (even though I knew exactly what I wanted to write). *cringe*

Thank you for the birthday wishes. Maybe this will get me to actually start posting again.
