Go back up your files!

Yes, right now.

I mean it!

The Internet will still be there when you're finished.
We all know we should do this regularly, but how many actually do? If your hard drive suddenly decides to commit suicide, will you be trying to kick your own @ss, as I am, for losing everything? Or will you only have to recreate a small portion ( Read more... )

We have learned that the hard way ourselves. We now have an iomega external hard drive which we keep on the table with our laptops, and every week or so we back up the laptops. I'm a bit paranoid, so I also keep all fic files backed up on a CD, and my in-progress folder is also on my memory stick. Overkill, I'm sure, but at least when I drop off my laptop to get the hinges repaired tomorrow, I know that if it gets wiped I have a copy of my entire hard drive backed up.

I *know* better, and every now and then I say, "I really should back up my files," but I just don't. You'd think I'd have learned last year, when something similar happened. (It was just the power supply that time, but the folks at the service center - the one they send it to if there's more than one thing wrong with it - wiped the hard drive as a matter of course. Bastards.)

We have a spare desktop lying around that we really should get rid of, as it needs a new motherboard. What I really need to do is put a new board in it, then set it up as a server to do automatic backups of both our computers. Auto is the way to go.

We bought the Iomega hard drive thru ecost, and I want to say it was about $175. We tend to use the dining room table as our computer area, so the hard drive sits on the table, and we just plug it into our laptops.

I leave all the computer innards to my husband. He had replaced motherboards, installed extra memory, etc. One of the laptops keeps fading out, so now we have purchased a replacement part for the screen but have yet to actually try fixing it.

My laptop has hinges that have mostly cracked thru. I just backed up the entire system in case they replace it rather than actually fixing it. This is one of the few things I'm glad we bought an extended warranty on.

Yes, I'm very glad for the extended warranty. I got the three-year option, so I've got one more year to go. It's been well worth the cost. I figured after three years I would want to replace it anyway, technology advances being what they are.

*laughs* That's exactly what my husband said when I told him that Dell offered a three or four year warranty. Three years is about how long it will last before it will fall behind in terms of the software it will run.

If he had bought an extended warranty for his previous laptop, we wouldn't have had to buy a new one a few weeks ago. He is going to try to repair it himself, so we may end up having three laptops, with one for the kids to use.

My laptop is almost two years old, and it's going in this week because the hinges have almost cracked right through. It has been happening for a while, but I was unwilling to go without my computer for any length of time. We're heading out on Friday for a week of camping, so now is the perfect time to let it go!
