The energy benefits of solar electricity are very modest, with a break-even point of about a decade circa 1995. Possibly a bit less now, but given the relatively consistent price, I'd guess it hasn't been reduced by a whole lot. What's even worse is dropping a decades worth of electricity out in a relatively short time period because of potential positive GHG feedback loops, not to mention the increase in pollution. The use of a storage system must also be accounted for, and would definitely drag the cost out a bit more. After digging around a bit, nuclear fission seems to the safest, most environmentally responsible and cost effective source of baseload power, provided it's run responsibly. Which is a big if in this country.
