Victory! The lesser victory of the two, but still....

The President signed the Matthew Sheppard hate crimes bill today. It's been years since I've been an activist, but a trans-inclusive hate crimes bill was one of the two major goals we were working toward when I was. ENDA is still out there, and there are plenty of other things wrong, but this at least is a step forward.

politics, lgbt, trans

Yay!

It makes me wonder how our hate speech laws, which are currently being debated, will be changed though. http://bit.ly/FqExx

There was a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that was released earlier this week (Tuesday, I believe). One of the questions on the poll was measuring approval of same-sex marriage. It was 41% in favor, 49% opposed; and they compared the numbers to those from the same question asked in March 2004. At that time it was 30% in favor and 62% opposed; so while it's not swung over in favor of same-sex marriage just yet, it's nearly drawn even (and with the 4.4% MoE, it's a statistical dead-heat), and that's quite a lot of movement in 5 years. And further proof that the Republicans are on the wrong side of the political momentum in this country.
