Just remember how much worse it would've been if we didn't bomb Hiroshima. Horrible to say, but probably over a million more would've died if we didn't- and that's just Japanese civilians. We decided to drop the bombs after the women, children, and elderly committed mass suicide on Okinawa, and our brass realized that we had to get the Emperor to surrender, or the Japanese would all either fight to the death or kill themselves.

Kind of strange to think of the A-bomb as being merciful, but when looked at in a historical context, it probably saved over a million lives. This relates to your next post too- if the Emperor hadn't been viewed as divine, we probably wouldn't have needed to resort to such shockingly drastic measures to make sure he wouldn't order the people to their deaths.
