Yes... it is because of 'Force Unleashed' next year

So.... thinking about a 3rd generation console - some time around or after X-mas.

The negatives of each I can think of:

PS3 - More expensive. Less extensive game selection. Toasty warm.

XB360 - Sounds like an aircraft taking off all the time. HD-DVD losing badly to Blu-Ray. Less powerful than PS3. Butt ugly.

Wii - Other than innovative controller, is a ( Read more... )

games, star wars

i would say x360 at this point in time. just because theres a hell of a lot more good games for it right now (including some great stuff on live arcade - geometry wars, space giraffe, speedball 2 and rez is coming out soon too!)

is hddvd really losing *that* badly at the moment? i thought a couple of the big studios were paid off so they only went with HDDVD for the next 18 months or something? does that not make a difference? (im happy with dvd/xvid at the moment, but that may be because i havent forked out for a big new tv yet)

The digital film/media professionals in my office are convinced that HD-DVD has numbered days. Apparently the $150 million they threw at Paramount for (nearly - Spielberg prefers Blu-Ray, refused and is exempt from the deal) exclusivity was a panic response to Blockbuster flushing their HD-DVD stock due to lack of demand and going 100% Blu-Ray (Blu-Ray is currently outselling HD-DVD roughly 2:1).

But I agree, that's not a particularly bit factor at the moment... least until I have a mahoosive TV.

personally, i want a wii (its a gamegube with an innovative controller, which im happy with.. its all about the FUN!) and an xbox360 just for a few games (see above)

havent seen anything with the ps3 so far that has made me go "oooh. i want one now!"

give it a year or two, let them sort out the price problem, and when theres more games/things for it, then i might consider it.

(tbh though, im happy with my chipped xbox with mame/emulators and XBMC)

The PS3 is the supirior machine but lack the killer games and francises' and then again the price to put it bluntly you could walk away with a wi and a xbox premium in comparison with the ps3, learn from the ps 2 most people who used it for a dvd player soon just went and bought a dvd player......

Buy a better PC
Laugh at console owners trying to aim crosshairs with a silly stick in their right hand

I will eat my hat if the force unleased isnt announced for PC soon

If you really have to buy a console
X Box 2 - mainly aimed at american college kids - no good games except Halo which is rubbish unless there's 20 of you
PS3 - Too expensive, but probably the "best" of the machines. Also has the best fighting games (what consoles are designed for)
Wii - the only console to do something better than the PC therefore the only one worth buying imo

And then buy a Blueray / HD drive when it's needed

recommendation is to get 2 consoles.
STEP 1 - get a Wii now,
they are cheap and fun. great for multiplayer that anyone can enjoy. party-tastic. and their selection of games really is coming forward.

STEP 2 - wait for PS3 to come down in price and has a few good games on. you'll benefit from waiting a bit and will be a nice step up from Wii, with enough distance between purchases to enjoy both and not dint the bank balance.

miss out on the X360 IMHO. never liked it anyway.

re brand loyalty, my first love was a NES but did also have megadrive & eventually a PS2. nothing ever replaced Zelda2 in my heart.
