Sewing/appliquéing pawpads

I'm not sure how to properly sew paw pads onto paws with the sewing machine, and every time I try, it's off. I can't see my line clearly even if it's charcoal pencil on white because the presser foot always blocks the view of it, so if you'd please share your technique I would be ever so grateful

Depending on your machine, you may be able to buy a clear presser foot, which people specifically use for applique. Like this one:
