Silk Roads Cooking by Naghmeh Batmanglij. Seriously she has the name "batman" in her last name. It was a fascinating read and has recipes organized by place and little side stories about where they came from. Not as direct as this novel sounds, but interesting nonetheless.
There is a Persian dish called fessenjoon in which, when prepared for kings, they would slaughter a duck that has been fed entirely on walnuts and the butter of olives. I can only imagine how incredibly delicious that duck was.
