June Bugs!

Polyphylla decemlineata, to be exact.

Two of these beauties just careened into my kitchen, and were thwacking around on the cabinets.  I managed to catch them both, and thanks to the internets I could look them up.  I was able to ascertain that:

1.  They are not endangered (i.e. the Mt. Hermon June Beetle is rare and protected)
2.  They are actually ( Read more... )

I have no idea how to display those, but that is one stunning beetle!!!

Reminds me of the beetles I used to find as a kid. My dad, being a carpet fitter hated them (he said they ate wool).:)

Very nice!

They're very cute! A bit over an inch long, and they hiss at you when they feel threatened! If I knew that they would go on and live, I'd let them go. I tend to only collect things that are dead/dying already.

My daughter is completely enthralled.

Those are lovely. :D
There's a how-to somewhere in the community about how to successfully spread insects... hmm.

Don't suppose I could convince you to nab a few for me? I used to have them in my collection til I loaned them out to be used in an education display. The person I loaned them too didnt keep a close enough eye and they ended up dismantled. The area I moved to doesn't get them and while I hate most bugs, I like those buggers since they remind me of childhood summers

I would not mind at all, however now that I look at that link it's actually not the exact same bug.

Those are the ones we have around here. I'll be happy to get some for you if you still want some!

I'd love some! I am putting together some museum style bug displays for a bug loving family member, so the more types of bugs the better! I'm too far north for chafers.

I'd happily grab you a female, but I have no idea where to look for one. I find dead ones underneath things in my yard constantly, but I don't know if they landed there and died after flying or if they were flightless to begin with.

Now that I want to find them, I've managed to get one male. Ugh. I'll keep looking!

Oh and mine are also the species in the comment above. I've never seen the striped ones before.
