Scientific Coffee

A couple days ago, chronovore made a post regarding viennese triple cold brewing.  I looked around my kitchen and decided that I had most of the important labware necessary to conduct this experiment.  This was worthwhile because the process claims to extract 100% of the caffiene with minimal acidity courtesy of using cold water rather than hot.  The ( Read more... )

It would be interesting to try batch three on me -- I don't seem to react to caffeine, but perhaps larger quantities might elicit some effect.

I had a headache for most of Monday, but I'm not sure that's related to the large amounts of all three batches I had. That was probably more due to lack of water.

I think I prefer regular coffee though, in the end. Much like how I prefer real fruit juice instead of concentrate.

I can has your babies nau?

Seriously, I want a separatory funnel for my kitchen. All I've got for labware at home is a hot plate/stirrer, a graduated cylinder, and a bunch of nitrile gloves. Hm. I think I need Invitrogen certificates or something for Christmas.

No, you may not. You'll have to go speak to Royal about that :P.

My glassware collection has grown monumental as I save virgin equipment from the dumpster. It frightens my beloved chemist who does not like her food and drink to come from places that look like wet chemistry labs.

Royal will understand if it's for science. Controlled breeding program of brilliance to balance out the rampant breeding program of the South. It will be epic.

Today, as I was preparing to use the autoclave here, I looked high and low for the rack to slide in it. I finally found it, covered in bottles and cylinders and all sorts of things with a sign that said "Free Chemicals." I just about had a science orgasm and started plotting how I was going to smuggle these things home...

While it's not so pretty as your lab equipment, you can make cold extraction (i.e. toddy) coffee quite easily in one of these. Specially designed for the purpose!

Do not dilute your toddy coffee - those who advocate doing so are heretics who shall be struck down by the caffeine gods!

(Using a very very dark roast is advocated, as cold extraction leaves most of the "coffee" flavor in the grounds.)

Fear not, I gave them the genuine article without dilution. Afterward, some chose to adulterate it with alcohol and or milk.

And then Warren Ellis paraphrased about my girlfriend. Whoah.

I think I need a shower.
