Just a little insight from someone who has done more than her share of event planning when I worked at the winery, I will say it has pros and cons. On the plus side, it can be a lot of fun, it can be very satisfying to plan and pull off big events, and you get to meet interesting people and be part of a very special time in their lives. On the negative side, it can be very stressful, you give up all your weekends and weekend nights, 'cause that's when most people want to have their events, and if something goes wrong, you have a pissed off Bridezilla looking for someone to blame, and you are the sacrifical goat. If you decide to go ahead, I can't stress enough the importance of contracts. Get everything in writing, and make sure your clients sign off on everything. If it isn't in writing with their signatures, it doesn't exist. Also, your time is your money, so make damn sure you are paying yourself a decent wage, because everyone will try to get something for free.

If you need to pick my brain, I'm happy to advise as needed.

For me, in the long run, it wasn't, because I wasn't making enough money to justify losing all of my weekends. Much will depend on your particular area and how many other event coordinators there are in the area. I will tell you that the people who make the most money at it work for either very rich clients or corporations

My boss is setting me up with people who do events for ACS so I can get a better idea what all it intails.

Frankly, I think it's a terrific idea. It's something that can be gotten into slowly while you still support yourself with the ubiquitous day job, and I think you'd be good at it. How well do you handle people when you're stressed, though? That's one thing to consider.

I was thinking about the starting slowly. I spoke with my supervisor and she's getting me in touch with the people who schedule events for ACS to talk to.

I think it's a great area to explore. But owning your own business is not for the faint of heart. Definitely try internships and working for others in this field to be sure it's something that sutis you before going it alone.
