Weariness (AU RP)

Madeline sighed and curled up tighter, trying to find some position that would make her feel better. She had been feeling badly all day, her back was killing her, and she hadn't been able to take a nap because of it all. Finally, she gave up on trying to sleep and went downstairs, where she found her sister sitting in the kitchen

Rosaline reached out and patted Madeline's hand sympathetically. "It won't be long, I'm sure," she said, absently prying a fork from Viola's hand, "And you'll be so busy with the baby you won't even notice how weird everything feels."

"I feel sort of bad for Uncle Al, having to come out here for this and then the baby taking so long to come." Madeline said, resting her chin in her hands.

"He enjoys visiting, I'm sure," Rosaline said, "and he didn't even have to be here, really. Mom helped deliver Viola just fine."

"I guess," Madeline said, and sighed tiredly. "I wish Ling was here..."

Winry dropped her work on the table and and left her workshop, locking the door behind her. "We'd better get up there."

Madeline wiped at her eyes and nodded. "Y-yeah, just now," she whispered. "Will the baby come soon?"

"I'll go put the baby down for her nap," Rosaline said, "I'll be in when I'm done."

Al frowned softly when he saw she'd been crying. "No, probably not. Could be anywhere from a few hours to a whole day. Were you having contractions before your water broke?"

"Alright," Winry said, nodding as she hurried up the stairs.

"I don't think so," Madeline said. "I wasn't feeling good, but I just thought it was normal."

Al furrowed his brow in thought. "Alright, let me just see how far along you are," he said, liting her nightgown out of the way.

Madeline bit her lip and squeezed Winry's hand tightly as a contraction passed through her. When she finally relaxed, she looked down at Al helplessly. "I-is it time yet?"

Al nodded and smiled up at Madeline weakly. "I'd say it's about time."

"Are you ready?," Rosaline whispered to her.

"I-I think so," Madeline whispered back. "I want it to be over, but... I'm scared,"

"You'll do fine," Al said reassuringly, "Now push when you feel the next contraction, okay?"

Rosaline grabbed onto Madeline's hand tightly. "Don't be scared, it'll be okay, I promise."

Collapsing back against the bed, Madeline managed a weak smile as she looked up at her baby.

"Oh, good job, honey," Winry said proudly, and leaned in to kiss the side of her head softly.

Rosaline smiled as she looked down at the baby. His cheeks were pudgy and round, his hair dark, and his eyes such a deep blue they were nearly black.

"Here, take him," Al said, handing the squalling infant to Madeline.

Madeline hesitated for a moment, then reached out for him, carefully cradling him against her chest as she stared down at him. "He looks like Ling," she murmured, blinking back the tears that were gathering at the corners of her eyes.

Rosaline frowned slightly and looked over at her mother in concern. Something seemed off to her with the way Madeline was acting.

Madeline watched as Shen-Li's tiny hand closed around her finger, then pulled him up to hug him gently. This baby was her only link to Ling now, and she had no intentions of letting him out of her sight ever again.

"Don't you just love him?," Rosaline whispered, thinking of when she'd first held her own child.

Madeline sniffled and nodded. "Y-yes," she murmured, running her fingers through the baby's hair. "Now I know why you never put Viola down."

"See? now that you have him-" Rosaline paused midsentence when Shen-Li started to fuss in Madeline's arms.
