I can see both of their thought processes for this.

That introspection of Derek missing Stiles talking and that he didn't always do it to make noise...that there was a reason and whatevef that reason, Derek missed it.

Its so easy to take the things we dont initially prefer, including distractions and interruptions, and make them out to be bad and worthless. What Derek's learned is hisnown generosity, to become a person who gets the world as Stiles views it, and to partner with him in exploring it.
