Sirius Black knew he was going to Hell.  He’d been told so more times than he could remember, though surprisingly it was the only thing his parents had never threatened him with.

The muggle who had stumbled upon them whilst they were fumblingly groping with each other in the alley behind the night club had told them they were going to Hell.

Sirius told him to fuck off and carried on with what he was doing.

When Remus threw his head back and screamed in pleasure, Sirius grinned widely at how easily he had caused the werewolf to lose control.

If he was going to Hell, at least he knew that Remus would be right there with him.  Perhaps Hell wouldn’t be so bad…

He was wrong.

For wizards the threat of Hell wasn’t nearly so effective as the threat of Azkaban.  Surrounded by dementors and isolated from everyone, there were many who described it as its own form of Hell.

As Sirius crouched in the corner of his cell he contemplated Hell once more.

Azkaban wasn’t Hell, not even with the dementors crowding in on their latest inmate.

Sirius thought back to the last time he had seen Remus, knowing that it was a far from happy memory, and one the dementors couldn’t steal from him.

He remembered the look in Remus’s eyes as he had packed his things together.  The calm sadness and the overwhelming hurt had nearly torn him apart at the time; only the belief that Remus was the traitor had helped him keep his resolve to leave.

The look in Remus’s eyes, and knowing he had put it there, sent Sirius spiralling into his own personal Hell.

Hell wasn’t fire and brimstone and a cloven-hoofed devil carrying a pitchfork.

Hell wasn’t being locked in a prison, surrounded by dementors.

Hell wasn’t even reliving the memory of the moment when he had finally let his own insecurities and mistrust come between them.

Hell was the knowledge that he had condemned Remus to a Hell of his own by deserting him at a time when they should have been closer than ever.

Hell was the knowledge that there was nothing he could do to make things right again.

Sirius had always thought he would have to die before he went to Hell.

He was wrong.
