...okay, I'm sorry, I'm just a random person who stumbled across this from fpoke-of-ftairs, but.

NON-FULL-COLOR EDITIONS EXIST?! The vast majority of sources I've viewed have claimed the full-color is the only one and Danielewski was just making up the others. I mean, obviously you would know best writing that thesis on it, but I'd love more information. <3

Hello! Actually I also own this journal (I am the HoL guy it's me, basically)

The black and white and two-color editions do indeed exist; I've actually seen them both, and Martin Brick's analysis, like I said, only uses the two-color. The black and white came out first, because color printing is hella expensive, so the publishers wanted to make extra certain they had an audience before going all out. It was sort of a compromise, you see.

The Wiki entry has some information to that regard.

This edition is a two-color edition; you can see by using the "look inside" button and looking at the about this book page (where the publisher appears)

So... while it's easy to assume that MZD was just being, y'know, MZD, they are a Real Thing, Yo.

Also, the same is true of Only Revolutions - there really do exist a Sam only and Hailey only set.

And thank you so much for providing proof! Holy shit, this is THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME. I can't believe I can prove this for my friends. (I'm a pretty ardent HoL fangirl myself - I even put annotated pieces of printer paper into the edition that my circle of friends has been loaning around among itself. They have beautiful fantasies about a white-skinned goddess blue colored pencil in them and everything.)

I'd - I'd beg you to come to my game and bring said beautiful madness with you, because there's enough mild compensation powers that you'd be able to do it, but obviously this was impossible for a human being to do consistently.
