Grumpy and Nitpicking.

Rather a horrible Sunday - grey and very wet, with what I suppose is much-needed rain. I got up, had breakfast, then felt so fed up I went back to bed, and spent the rest of the day cursing my leg and feeling very sorry for myself. I think the latest problem is just due to the unaccustomed exercises, and will (I hope) clear up when I've rested ( Read more... )

Of course I haven't seen the actual production, but from your link, I was surprised to see that Amy Roberts designed the costumes, which I assume means in reality copied from portraits, since I doubt she was there so any centuries ago. I'm a bit of a costume Nazi myself and also am known to be verbally abusive to productions. I doubt anybody is ever going to top the totally wonderful Elizabeth R and for my money, Glenda Jackson is the definitive Elizabeth. Jean Hunnisett did all the costumes for that and they were magnificent (I have the book she wrote about it).

To be fair, the costumes themselves looked wonderful, it was just the fabrics that annoyed me, and I suppose you could make a good case for using handmade4 Indian stuffs rather than machine-made. It was more the way they were worn, especially by the male leads.

Don't they understand that the costumes and furniture and fiddly bits of period stuff are the whole point of watching?! Who cares about the plot or the actors!

I shall be over here communing with my new complete Aubrey/Maturin boxed set.
