I just ate two Saltines. I never have Saltines anymore. With the first bite I was about ten years old again. I never knew Saltines could be bringers of such glee ( Read more... )

Making it from scratch is such a stupidly good idea that I feel rather foolish now. I'll have to look for a recipe that doesn't look too hard! I'm just about positive I can buy tahini, and I know I can buy honey! It'd be nicer to be able to just buy some halvah though.

The place I find honey sticks is usually at farmstands that are selling their own brand of honey. Not sure where you are going to find one of those in metro Boston, though. Maybe if there is a farmer's market nearby?

There are a few that I could drive to, I think, but I've never been to one around here that had honey - and if they had honey, it would likely be in jars, not sticks. :-/ I've only ever seen honey sticks in shops.

Did you check the Jewish bagel store in Brookline?

Which one? :P I didn't check any of them, but if you have a specific one in mind that you think would be likely ...

Um, it's on Harvard Ave halfway between Comm Ave and whatever street Coolidge Corner is. I think. It's on a corner. That's all I know.

I recall I have seen honey sticks at Starbucks in Newtonville. But it's been a while.

Halvah ... well, I know Stop & Shop sells those bars of halvah, in the colored-and-white wrappers. Those are usually in/around the deli section. That's probably not what you're looking for. I remember seeing the slices of halvah wrapped in clear plastic, but I can't remember in what aisle they were in. I believe Shaws, tho, as a store. :/

That's totally what I'm looking for - it's what I had as a kid. Shaws used to have them by the deli counter and doesn't anymore. I'll have to cruise some Stop & Shops and Starbucks!

The ones made by Joyva, right? Like this? I haven't seen them at Shaws, but I know Stop and Shop does. If you go to the one on Pleasant Street, walk down past the salad bar and produce (toward the back of the store and the fish counter), the halvah should be in the last free-standing case before the back/the hot dogs. (that probably makes no sense).

Shaw's has a good "International" section. I have definitely seen halvah there - sometimes it is in the deli section though. Don't ask me why. Shaws at the Pru is usually the one I go to.
