It's easier if you wait until you really have to go. Drink a lot of water, tea, anything that makes you have to pee a lot and just hold it as long as you can. It does take practice.
What I did was practice peeing standing without the packer first.
Wait until you really have to go and then try squatting over the toilet while facing. It's a bit awkward and you'll most likely wind up straddling the toilet, but it's helped me adapt.
Oh and as someone else said, practice without your pants and underwear too! It gets a bit...messy.
I sort of... lean back and bow my legs. I tried with my STP for the first time in a grody concert venue about, oh, three hours after I bought it (mostly because I needed to pee like the dickens) and it worked pretty well.
