The court gave me several (maybe 3?) copies of the "original" name change order with the raised seal, so perhaps this is what they meant by certified copy. If not, you may need to be more specific and clarify that it needs to have a raised seal.

As far as the SS card and birth certificate go, I don't believe that is true. I just had to present my name and gender change letters for both of those and they changed it. Perhaps you can try changing your birth certificate first and then using that for the DMV if they are giving you the run around.

Actually SS policy is federal and according to their policy as I know it you can change your ss card as long as you have a photo id even if it has your old info along with your name change papers and surgery letter. Sometimes staff at these places tell you what they thing the policy is or should be as opposed to actually following the policy. I had 4 guys of mine (clients) who had top surgery recently and went to SS and got their gender changed with their surgery letter before even changing their ID because they thought they couldn't change ID til after surgery and by the time they found out they figured they would wait to change everything and it hasn't been an issue. Certified copies are to be accepted by Government agencies because they are still legal documents.

Also I think some of the people you are dealing with are just being difficult for difficult sake.
I suggest asking for a supervisor next time you go because that is unacceptable. Best of luck

Can you go to a different DMV office? If you can I would suggest doing that since at that location they are obviously nutty!

I second this.

OP, when I was getting my DL changed where I was living in Alabama at the time, I had a VERY hard time at a small office where I received the same treatment... talking loudly so everyone else in the office could hear, calling another office and telling them "we've got one of those sex change people here..." UGH

I left in frustration and later went to a bigger office in a larger city and had no problems.

Good luck to you!

And according to the SS website, you don't even need a photo ID if your name change court order has your old name, new name, and birth date on it; that's enough to prove your identity.

Sorry this is happening. Unfortunately, when I got my license changed in PA, they told me the policy was changing and you do have to have paperwork signed by a surgeon in order to change the marker. I don't know the specifics, but he did tell me if I wasn't there the day I was, I would need to have something signed by a surgeon in order to do so. This was in northeastern PA.

Go elsewhere. Stop going back to this DMV. Go to the largest city that you can get to within whatever your comfort zone is. For example, if you have a car or a friend who has a car, go to the closest city in your state within 5hrs. Plan this out and make a day of it, may be even an over night of you can, so that you can give your self some pay off for dealing with such an irritating situation. If you are pretty solvent, and buying a plane ticket isn't crazy, and the nearest city is a short flight away, fuck it. Fly there. Go to that metro area 's DMV. Before you travel to the new CITY DMV, talk to Garramone's office and tell them you need them to fill out paperwork for you. Explain it's an emergency situation, you need it done within the day (or even give him 72 hrs.) Fax the forms that DMV requires from the surgeon, that way you'll have all your required paperwork ready when you are good to go ( ... )

But going to a large city DMV is going to give you better chances of starting with a new person, than going to the local small town one person DMV, where you have and are guaranteed to continue having the same person.

I don't have anything especially pertinent to add to this discussion other than I can't for the life of me figure out why people/government agencies are being such dicks about this. Why should anyone care that you're changing your name? And your gender status isn't anyone's business but yours. What bullshit. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this crap.
