Just some info for those who  live in Allegheny county (PA)  you will need to change your birth certificate BEFORE you can change your SS Card ( Read more... )

I'm sorry but the SS laws are federal and though this office may "prefer" you to change your birth certificate that is not always a possibility. Some guys born in places like OHIO can't change their birth certificate in which case a surgeons letter is accepted and if they don't accept it you can call the higher ups and they HAVE To accept it ( ... )

This. I changed my name with the SSA BEFORE having top surgery and my gender marker was changed automatically when my driver's license marker was changed AFTER top surgery. (Ohioan here)

Thank you for the additional iformation on this! :) I was just going by my own experience with the SS office in my county.

Understand that but what they made you do was NOT policy and I would rather pass on the proper policy to people than Front desk people getting away with making up their own rules and having people jump through unnecessary hoops.
