Mars and Venus: The Difference Between Male Starconners and Female Starconners

(Yes, I have decided to call Star Control fans "Starconners." "Starconnie" is too cute, "Star Control freak" is too easy a pun, and I can't think of anything suitable that ends in "-head ( Read more... )

In other words, both male and female Starconners are provided with fanservice, but only male Starconners are so provided intentionally, and only they feel sexually validated within the game's context. Female Starconners are denied such a "pleasure" within canon, so they congregate to create it for themselves and each other.

Since when do us female Starconners all have to be straight?

Sorry. I appreciate her, too.

It's okay. I just had to point out that there was at least one female here who has fond memories of playing the old DOS version of SC2 at age 13 and lusting after Talana. :)

Huh. I'll admit that I didn't read all of this - not yet, anyway, but my first impression is that I now want to go and write a military conflict with OCs and politics.

I don't know, but you've got me thinking. Thanks!

Interesting article! Well-thought out! And... well, now I confuse me even a little more than usual. @_#

Hello, maybe I should register here or something...maybe later. In any case i can be found at UQM forum and SCDB as Cedric6014.

Anyway, I always thought it unfortunately that Star Control II didn't cater for female players. My hope for a sequel is that both male and female player characters can be accommodated (anyone ever play Star Wars KOTOR?), especially if relationships are involved. Gay and straight options - that would be interesting.

Incidentally: I find Frungy Lovers to be utterly impenetrable. I don't understand a damn thing in here. Whats will all the sketches of people having conversations and such like? Arrrggghhh! Conversations?

Is there a Frungy Lovers 101 course I can take?

Just give it time. Read enough of the posts and comments, and something will go *snap* in your brain, and SUDDENLY IT WILL ALL BECOME CLEAR TO YOU. JUST LIKE DR. BUKOWSKI. IT HAPPENED TO ME TOO.

Oh yes, and the Secret Theater series of fake screencaps is useful "implied history" background information for much of the fanwork here. Skimming those may help too. ;)

Haha, oh, hi. |D Welcome!

Oh, definitely read the Secret Theater. If I recall correctly, it was kind of the impetus for this place; I think most of the members joined the community through it (although I could be wrong).

And the tags post if you haven't seen it.

Yes, the Secret Theater was what I was referring to when I mentioned zarla's "proclivities contagion" in the essay.

While I would broadly agree with the observations made in this essay, and add that I've also seen this kind of gender-based polarization in other fandoms such as that for the Metal Gear Solid games for the Playstation, I also feel the need to state, for the record, that I am a guy. I'm also straight, in real life. Well, maybe bicurious. I won't go into details unless asked, but I just wanted to throw that out there.
