You Are an Excellent Student
"I'll rock this semester!" I shouted, hope in my heart. For the longest time, I have been making As and Bs in his upperlevel history classes. The one course looming before me, a Civil War course, would put one more A up there. It would prove to me that I wasn't a mere average historian, but excellent at my field.

Sure, you're knowledgeable, but just knowing stuff isn't enough if you don't do it right..
That's like saying 'well, i knew how to disarm the bomb, but i didn't complete it properly'
You did it wrong, and thus you got a low mark. Take it not as a setback, but as a learning opportunity, you gotta pay more attention.
I say this because you say you are confused, and i'm helping un-confuse you, this is why you are getting a D, because you didn't do it right. No matter how much you know, if you don't complete the task correctly, you can hardly expect anything else.
Feel frustrated, thats the right emotion. But hurt? What? No one is doing it to be mean, no one is out to get you, no one is doing it on purpose. Its not like he's saying 'oh, well, it a good exam, but i hate you, so i'm giving you a D'
You screwed up man, it happens, its not like a B is bad, god.
