let me entertain you #1: film recs

Aug 13, 2007 16:12

This is for autoridade, thelackoflight, tea_sky, cj_same, randomposting, tijsmans, a_red_spot, tya_rc, denrito and any one who changed her/his mind and wants some film recs after all.

I went through my list of films I watched in 2006 and came across 8 films that I really, really LOVED and I think are less known. It turned out as a little more than just a list, I added a few comments and most importantly: pretty caps.

So these are my recommendations:

notes:
• Like I've said, I tried to only list the ones I think are less known. If for some crazy reason you have not seen Little Miss Sunshine, Brokeback Mountain, The Motorcycle Diaries, Moonlight Mile, Shopgirl, Hooligans, Donnie Darko, Serenity, The Lake House or Pride & Prejudice consider them added to this list and watch 'em!!!!!
• There are only 8. If you want more, let me know and I'll make another one of these posts. Because there are more, many more recommendations.
• I don't know if this is important for anyone but I didn't bother adding a rating to each film. Because really, which should I have taken? The strict US rating? The UK's? Our Belgian system? I never pay any attention to it when I go to the theatre because very few films get a NC-17 rating at all and I'm past that age anyway. I checked though and 6 of them were 'Kids Allowed' in Belgium (the other two I couldn't find a rating of) but that doesn't mean there's no swearing, drug use or sex scenes. Because there is.

C.R.A.Z.Y. [2005. Canadian. language: French. drama/comedy.] tells the story of Zac Beaulieu, born on the 25th of December 1960, who grows up in 1960s and 1970s Quebec. With four brothers, a mother that is convinced he is Jesus 2.0 and a homophobic father who fears his son might be gay, Zac struggles to define his own identity. (imdb, trailer)

I went to the theatre not knowing what to expect of this film and I was just blown away. This was so, so awesome and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. The soundtrack is also reallyreallyreally good and my crazy love for David Bowie's Space Oddity started because of this film. Oh, just watch that trailer and tell me that doesn't sound/look good!

Il Mare/Siworae [2000. South Korean. language: Korean. romance/sci-fi.] When Eun-joo moves out of a house by the sea called "Il Mare", she leaves a Christmas card in the mailbox, asking the next resident to please forward her mail to her. Sung-hyun, an architectural student, finds the card but is baffled when he sees it is dated two years in the future. (imdb)

The Lake House was based on this Korean gem which is, like so many originals, much, MUCH better than the remake (tough I like The Lakehouse as well). The atmosphere in this version is more intimate and mysterious. Also? Cola is just the cutest little dog. Awww.

Dear Frankie [2004. British. language: English. drama.] "Dear Frankie" are the words all the letters the kid receives start with. He thinks they're from his Dad at sea when really his Mum has been writing them for years. When the ship his Dad is supposed to be on really comes to their town, Mum hires a Dad ... (imdb, trailer)

This was a cute, feel-good movie that I watched with the family. Makes you want to go to Scotland and have a nice portion of fish and chips. Or maybe that was just me?

Paris, je t'aime [2006. French. language: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin. romance.] is a collection of 18 shorts about love in Paris.
(imdb, good trailer, other trailer)

Yes, here I go again. I am so happy several of you listened to me and watched it already and I'm thrilled that most of you even truly enjoyed it. I'm including it in this list just in case someone spent some time living under a rock or just managed to ignore my previous two posts about this film. It seriously made me feel so good, it made me laugh and it even made me cry. Oh and just ignore the comment in my older post where I say it is like Love Actually. Because it's NOT. I only said that to try to explain the idea (several stories about love), but that was a bad idea because well, it's just not at all like that. It's MUCH better and MUCH more realistic. And beautiful. A couple of stories are rather bad but most of them are great and some are even awesome. If all my talking about it still hasn't convinced you, have a look at the list of actors: Juliette Binoche, Steve Buscemi, Willem Dafoe, Gérard Depardieu, Marianne Faithfull, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Bob Hoskins, Nick Nolte, Natalie Portman, Gaspard Ulliel, Elijah Wood, and many more. WATCH THIS!
(By the way, any one has the soundtrack? I'm looking for it.)

Io Non Ho Paura [2003. Italian. language: Italian. drama/thriller/mystery.] One day, during the the hottest summer of the century, Michele discovers something on the bottom of a hole ... (imdb)

Perhaps that isn't a lot of information but I didn't want to spoil it by telling you too much. Last year we watched several films in Italian class and this one was the only one that didn't bore me to death. It was great even! Most of us stayed after class so we could finish watching it. The shots and colours are gorgeous and it was a little scary and exciting. Perfect mix.

Driving Lessons [2006. British. language: English. drama/comedy.] Ben, the shy son of a vicar, tries to escape the suffocating environment created by his mother. When he meets Dame Evie, his world changes. (imdb)

It was so good to see Rupert in something different than Potter! He still had certain things and expressions I recognize in Ron (guess those are Rupert things?) but I loved him in this mix of drama and comedy.

The Calcium Kid [2004. British. language: English. comedy.] is a mockumentary about a Milk Man/amateur boxer who suddenly has to fight the world champion. (imdb)

I very much enjoyed this film, much to my own surprise. Finally there's a role of Orlando's that's not a rip-off from Legolas. And Billie Piper was a very nice bonus ;)

Marie-Antoinette [2006. American/French/Japanese. language: French/English. historical drama.] The story of Marie-Antoinette, Archduchess of Austria and later Queen of France. (imdb)

It's pretty, it's entertaining and sometimes even touching. This was definitely my favourite Sophia Coppola film.

Questions, rambles, opinions (even ones in which you do not agree with me!) etc. are love! :D If this was in any way helpful to you, please comment as well. That way I know I didn't spend hours making this for myself.
