And I totally agree with you on Gravitation haha. I also watched it around 2006-2007, and I was SO happy to see canon LGBT representation in anime, but then I realized that show is just... so bad lol
Those were the dark years where every mm or ff couple had to be vaguely rapey, unhealthy or just straight up illegal thanks to one person being underage....

omg i can't believe were were watching Gravitation at the same time and having much of the same opinions xD it was just so bad and kinda put me off of watching any more shonen ai. I don't mind the unhealthy dynamics or agediff in general in ships, since most of my favorite noncanon ships have that going on, even many of the ships listed here. I like dark romance, but it works a lot better in my head than in any actual canon couple so I never want these things to actually exist in a series, only in my imagination. I just don't like canon romance in general I guess, and Yuki and Shuichi were just particularly annoying together :p

Oh don't get me wrong, I love me some unconventional relationships, and generally things like age difference or power imbalance don't bother me (..tbh, most of my fav couples have both :D), but somehow those anime series from 00s were potraying it all so... uncomfortably. I remember watching an anime with like, a couple that was maybe 30 and 18, but the younger dude looked 12? I know it's a part of anime style sometimes but still, ugh. Plus, I guess it's the difference between reading a fanfic about a couple you already like, and watching anime where you're supposed to like the couple based on the unhealthy relationship portrayal.
... that's why I prefer watching the queerbait shows tbh. Shipping is always more fun than canon :D

I didn't know it was a general common thing in anime from that era, since I only watched this one (probably should have tried something else first...). But yeah, I think it's the lack of intentional portrayal as dysfunctional (iirc it was totally romanticized instead of just going full on with the darkness?), and also the infantilization going on with Shuichi, like, he was supposed to be an older teenager I think???, but acted like a total child, which just makes it totally impossible to see what an older grumpy guy like Yuki could possibly see in him.

I mean of course I understand why representation is a good thing and all, so I shouldn't be asking for queerbaiting (I prefer the term "ship tease" cause it doesn't sound sooo bad and ( ... )

The compositions, text use, and coloring...how!? 7 is too amazing. Episode 3 might still be my favorite and I love purple and yellow/orange together.
Ben Barnes' face is a perfectly fine reason so watch a movie! I watched Parks and Recreation in September and I was glad to immediately find some awesome icons here :D
