oh, 1000% agreed with all of this!

but somehow those anime series from 00s were potraying it all so... uncomfortably.
I didn't know it was a general common thing in anime from that era, since I only watched this one (probably should have tried something else first...). But yeah, I think it's the lack of intentional portrayal as dysfunctional (iirc it was totally romanticized instead of just going full on with the darkness?), and also the infantilization going on with Shuichi, like, he was supposed to be an older teenager I think???, but acted like a total child, which just makes it totally impossible to see what an older grumpy guy like Yuki could possibly see in him.

... that's why I prefer watching the queerbait shows tbh. Shipping is always more fun than canon :D
DUDE, THANKS FOR SAYING THIS I feel so guilty for having this exact thought but.. yeah. I mean of course I understand why representation is a good thing and all, so I shouldn't be asking for queerbaiting (I prefer the term "ship tease" cause it doesn't sound sooo bad and isn't gender specific :p), but like, established relationships are always either boring or totally unhealthy dramafests so I prefer just focusing on the looong drawn out part of chemistry before anything actually happens, and that's why I prefer things to stay noncanon - it's like the ship is stuck in my favorite part of the relationbship forever :) (I'd be the worst writer/showrunner ever, fans would hate my guts xD)

Haha, this. Sloooooow burn is my favorite way of a ship getting together, and it so rarely happens with canon ships... When showrunners see chemistry between characters, or get a positive reaction from fans, often the get together process gets rushed for ratings :/
Plus personally, I just prefer to have the ship non-canon because it opens up the possibility of a character having chemistry with another one later, and multi-shipping has always been my thing :D (not to mention, fanfics are always better for non-canon ships since writers are less restrained by canon events.... and I so love me some fanfiction)

We definitely share a brain when it comes to shipping :D you make many good points! Canon writers are indeed more restrained by the already established ship progress, and also a part of it for me is that if some pair's potential has already been well explored on screen, it doesn't leave me hungry for more. They already got together, so what's there to see anymore. It's those ships that have a ton of untapped potential that captivate me to no end. Aw this conversation made me miss reading fanfiction. I just never have the time these days, but it was so much fun back in the day! I even tried writing some, but I'm pretty sure mine was all badfic :p
