Mediæval fabrics are gorgeous.
I'd love to have seen our tall, compellingly attractive young Archdeacon in his full processional robes… a rich brocade cope, with embroidered and beaded edges…

mmmm brocade and beads......sorry, I got sidetracked by the fabric. I just can't even get over it. That really makes reading it and re-imagining it more fun.

Seed-pearls and gold-work. See the figure of the bishop on the left in this painting by van Eyck. Claude would be wearing beautiful processional vestments (probably in funereal colours: black or purple brocade) when Esméralda does penance on the steps of Notre Dame.
