I am taking splinters off of logs ... meaning, I bring a big knife (with a curve in it) down on a log while inside fending off a baby so that I can get some small kindling. Yeah. It will be interesting when I learn how to use an axe in the spring. :D
You can totally learn how to use an axe in the middle of winter!! But not inside with a baby. ;)
You're right about the smaller logs, by the way -- I've been despairing that the wood was split into such big pieces this year, and that I don't seem to be strong enough to split them into two equal chunks. Somehow it's easier to chop kindling...
