Thoughts on Roslin and Janeway
Contemplating BSG/Voyager Crossovers: The Birth of the Janeway/Roslin Pairing
People have been coughing up Janeway/Roslin fics the past few weeks, myself included, and mostly on femslash100. I've been hoping to see longer fics of the non-drabble sort (kjaneway has created one). The community is growing. We could probably credit that to Voyager/BSG fans who have found these two leaders disarmingly similar and at the same time, completely different.
They're both very principled women, both are trying to find their way home. Janeway is a scientist and a Captain. Roslin's a visionary, a prophet if you will, and the (now former) President of the Colonies. I can't possibly express the vast potential of slashing these two characters. For one, there's the tension between methodologies, ideologies even; Roslin is a politician, Janeway's an explorer...both are diplomats.
Then there's that similarity: their integrity, their struggle to get across great distances. Alongside that, the contrasting ways with which they bend or break the rules. And oh my, do they bend and break them. Being leaders, they have to maintain a certain distance from their subordinates, and they have to make the most unpopular (decisions. It's for this reason that fans admire them so much. Putting them in the same room however; you see vulnerabilities on both women put to relief. Most times, in either hiding it or repressing it entirely, they do it at the cost of being alone.
I remember being a vehement fan of Chakotay and Janeway together. I couldn't stand the idea that he ended up with Seven. I was incensed. But as I grew older, (dare I say wiser), I realized that Kathryn just couldn't and wouldn't do it. The risks were too much, the price to pay too big. If you had more than a hundred people under your command, all of you lost in the Delta Quadrant and finding your way home...there's little else you can give to a significant other. It would be selfish -at least in one perspective -to hold a relationship knowing that your heart belongs to your mission.
I'd love to see Roslin and Janeway in morally and even ethically challenging situations, forced to bounce off each other, to compromise, to complement. And maybe, in one way, to love. It's about time these two were loved (by each other, dare I hope?) without having to think about the consequences. So then, we arrive at the dynamics of putting them in bed together, or at least, in the same space. We arrive at all sorts of complications and at the same time, a different brand of giving, since they know (in their own way) the other's situation so intimately. Chuck in some Janeway/Seven and Roslin/Starbucks...Oh my. What a volatile brew.
(But that's of course, if your fic's going to be the dark and brooding sort [blame that on radak] with a lot of hate!sex. Oh my, I'm babbling and not making any sense. But I love this pairing so there...)
