Weeping Willow

“I didn’t expect to see you here.”

He looks up, the sunglasses hiding his eyes. He frowns at the grave, then at her. “It’s my fault.”

“How?”

“I should have persuaded him otherwise. I could have stopped him from letting this happen.”

She blinks back tears, walking over to stand next to him. “I expected this from Clark, but not from you.”

She glances at the tombstone, then back at him. He bows his head once more, and she slips an arm round his shoulder.

He chuckles weakly. “I should be comforting you. You’re his wife.”

He puts an arm round her waist, letting her lean into him as she sobs slightly. “Ex-wife.” She corrects. “You remember?”

“Right.”

He walks her back to a bench beneath a willow tree, still able to see the grave. They sit together, feeling comfortable...warm.

“I thought I’d lost everyone.” She states and he looks at her. “But I have you, right?”

He doesn’t say anything, but he tightens his grip on her waist and allows her to cry into his shoulder as she remembers.

When her eyes are finally dry, he clears his throat. “Want a coffee?”

“Always.”
