Are there *any* manufacturers out ther that produce a decent room humidifier that will actually last more than 2-3 years before crapping out?

I don't know manufacturers, but I do know that most recommend you use distilled water and not tap water. Try looking at http://www.sylvane.com/tips-for-maintaining-your-humidifier.html

I noticed the one my partner just got didn't have any mention of distilled water, which excited me. It also has instructions for removing scale with vinegar. It's a warm mist model - boils.

Something I would like to know as well. I have specific requirement though, I don't want bright indicator lights on it and it has to be quiet, otherwise it keeps me awake.

I'm on my fourth year of using this one, which - knock on wood - shows no signs of stopping despite being a toddler/preschooler's plaything. (He IS pretty gentle with it, but it's had more than its share of being turned on and off.) There is a single tiny indicator light right above the knob, which can be taped over. On the setting where you can barely see the mist coming out, which is plenty of humidity for us, I can't hear it at all. On the highest setting, it's pretty quiet; but the room will be a sauna soon.

Thanks, That one is cute. But, I tend to prefer warm mist humidifiers. The cold mist ones chill the room and just make me feel damp.

It's lasted a long time, mostly because it's so uncomplicated.

We've never had to, and yes, tap water. It does need to be rinsed out now and again.
