Airport Living

Yesterday was my last official day in Tokyo and immediately after I posted my last update I had to download some pictures for about an hour and then jump on the train to Narita.  I had completely forgotten where the train was supposed to connect to take the local train to the airport (Aoto), and thus wound up transferring too early and getting on ( Read more... )

>I wound up paying 1600 Yen for Tonkatsu, which was an outrageous amount of money to blow in one meal for me.

Wait. Did you miss a zero? You live in DC. ¥1600 is a tad expensive for dinner, but not overly so. I paid ¥1378 yesterday, including tip. Lunch for me, when I eat it at all, usually runs ¥528.

Now you paying ¥1,600 - that I would have freaked out at.

Now, having to get a hotel sucks, absolutely, but finding one for ¥238 (元)?? And that was 20% of your travel money???

Sweet Goddess, Eric! Either I have to go to Japan, like, next week, or you have to teach me how to travel on what looks like ¥5/day! :-)

Yea Doc. If you hadn't noticed I'd basically lived out of vending machines and 7-11's in Japan. Most of the time I spent around 500 Yen. Tea was usually 100 and a bun was like 110, and usually a box of something was around 230. So the Tonkatsu shop was like 4 times more than what I normally spent. My limit for each day was 5,000 Yen, and that included buying stuff other than food and Metro fare. That's a perfectly reasonable amount especially if you can find deals, and I found a ton of them.

China is way cheaper place than Japan. And yeah, the 238元 I shelled out for the hotel was 20% of the money I brought with me. I have friends here so I'm not paying for a hotel but for that one night, and most all of my meals are ultra cheap or comped. I think the most expensive thing I bought here was a teddy bear from the university vendor that cost me 48元. Which was a lot, but it's probably the only thing I'll buy here other than food. I may get a slightly larger tote bag, but other than that nada.

Actually, that IS a match Kit Kat! It's a Sakura Matcha flavor, hence the green color/flavor. But Kit Kat's Sakura flavors always seem a bit tasteless to me--too mild! Starbuck's sakura is much better :)

I thought that might be what was going on. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
