I only came across your blog entry because I did a Google search on Fr. Quinlan. To be honest, I'm pretty surprised anyone on LJ would know about him but I'm so glad someone did. I grew up in Hampton, Virginia, attended St. Vincent's in Newport News because it was such a progressive parish (and very integrated). I went to Peninsula Catholic (when it was still in downtown Newport News). Father Quinlan was no longer at the parish when I was really active, but he did teach a bible study on Mark for a few weeks (it was packed and of course he would shock several participants).
I moved to NYC in 2000 and while things were already being tightened up in the Catholic Church back home in terms of a crack down and conservatism, it's much worse here. Churches tend to be very cold, and I don't know how much of that is just a NYC cultural thing versus a real coldness (or deadness) in the churches.
Just thought I would say hi ;)
Thanks
