0th day

Mar 06, 2007 20:29

Went around looking at some of the posters today (so I called it the 0th day, as inspired by thermodynamics and since SSEF technically starts tomorrow anyway) after setting up mine and yzq/bensing/yongzi's; was pretty late by then so most of the posters were up anyway. Came across a couple of interesting (read: probably doomed to fail) projects as ( Read more... )

...optimum angle needed for the shuttlecock to fly the furthest is 45 degrees

Actually this is non-trivial because of aerodynamics. Consider that the optimum angle for a golf ball is very small (~19 degrees, if i remember correctly).

I am zibeing over my n00b projects. ;_;

(Wtf is games day?)

Its probably some free time where people get to frolick around, or maybe they might organise some inter fac/class competitions *shrugs*

Heh your project was on sampling and statistics? If i remember correctly..

Yea. I got a second one about speech recognition language modelling. Aiyah zibei zibei zibei ;_; ;_;

it isnt that everything there is to do is trivial. i think building the most aerodynamic shuttlecock is highly non-trivial.

it is just that everything that they CAN DO is trivial. same for most of the other projects.

Thats all that happens at secondary school/jc level isn't it, only an exposure/a taste of what research is like, or at most a more 'hands-on' approach to learning the 'scientific method'. Even if you're interested in doing more, you're limited by time/commitments, mentors, and resources/money.

And most projects at this stage aren't significant enough to make it into scientific journals, though the probability does exist (e.g. wee's extended project), so I suppose you can call it 'trivial'. Though given more time/resources/etc, I don't see why people like wee/tyz can't do more.

then why are u complaining that shuttlecock projects only seek to reestablish fact since that is all they can do. :P

i dunno lah. if all that projects (at our level) requires is time and not much brilliance, then why is it that ssef and all these science attachment thingies are so coveted by scholarship boards/school? mebbe they just want to see that yuo are willing to spend some tiem to do 'research' (read: reinvent the wheel).
