There was a Cabal Agent inside the Sanctuary.
Scratch that, there was another Cabal Agent inside the Sanctuary. Dana would keep pulling her puppetstrings as long as she was alive and useful, or at least as long as Kate had something or someone to lose. She tried not to think about what that would entail.
Kate knew she was walking a fine line between

"Come on - get off!" Nikola mutters, as the bird flaps around his head, pecking lightly at him. Nikola fishes the tin of bread out and breaks it up for the bird which at the very least earns him some peace as he heads back downstairs and saunters over to his desk. Well, not technically 'his' desk. It was an ordinary library desk pushed over by the window but everybody knew that it was now is and didn't dare go anywhere near it ( ... )

"What did you say? 'Keep you playing nice' - is that what you said?"
There was almost no doubt about it from that sentence. She had made contact with the Cabal again - and it sounded terribly like she was still playing for them.

"Look, if there's someone shifty around here, I know you can find then, and not have to start a witch hunt to do it. Doesn't matter what you think of me, you still need to find the mole."
The other one.

Nikola reached forward before she could move and latched onto her wrist - tugging her sharply towards the door.

His hand closed in a vicelike grip that threatened the ability to crush bone if she struggled too much, "Ow! Watch it!" She protested, there was no need to be rough.

Nikola started dragging her toward the door. Yes, he believed her that there might be another agent in the building - he could not help that suspicion crawling in - what - with all the new faces running around of late... But that did not change the fact that Kate was still selling them out - still betraying them. After everything that had happened - he just could not understand why a person would do this - one with a conscience anyway.
She could live out the rest of her days in captivity for all Nikola cared.

"There is always a choice," Nikola all but snarled, looking down where she had fallen, making no move to help her up. That had been a long time coming - to hell with his Victorian upbringing. If Kate was not going to act like a lady, he was not going to treat her as one. She was just lucky that he hadn't used claws.

"Not when they have my brother, there isn't", Kate hissed, pushing herself up on her arms, spurred on by desperate fury at the people who would use her family to control her when everything else had failed.
"I don't give a shit what you think of or do with me, but this is my mess. It's my fault he's into all of this and if I don't toe the line, I'm going to start getting severed ears in the mail. Happy now? Huh? If you're going to gloat, just do it."
By the end of it all, the anger behind her words was more toothless than anything, and she even looked almost close to tears.

His look did not soften but he did pause when she mentioned her brother. Nikola felt responsible for his own brother's death. He'd watched himd die - Nikola seven - his brother ten. He still relived that often in his dreams. The crushing sound of the horse's hooves cracking his brother's spine.
He had only one question for her.
"Did they have your brother before or after you sold us out Kate? Before or after you decided to work for them, weasiling your way into the Sanctuary?"

They might have. They might have had Thad all along, as an insurance policy, but if they had, she hadn't know. She had no excuse for what she'd done, and she knew it.

But that did not change the fact that there was now another innocent person involved. One that did not deserve to die just because Kate couldn't do the right thing and pick a side.
"Do you know where he is?"

No amount of self control could mask the shame and guilt that crept across her features when she talked about her family. She'd never been there for Thad when he needed her, she'd been too caught up in her own anger and rebellion to pay him any attention.
"No", she admitted, voice echoing hollowly as she just couldn't get up the motivation to get off the floor, "Probably somewhere close in case..."
She didn't want to think about Dana's style of making a point.

"As you know there are three bases nearby... I'm surprised you haven't tried to rescue him yourself? I find it rather hard to believe that the Cabal would let you come back here with the obvious suspicion surrounding you. Surely it would have just been easier to kill you and your brother and start again... Which, by the sounds of it is what they have done if as you say, there is another agent in this Sanctuary.
"What possible use could your continued existence be to the Cabal?"

She didn't understand it either, but obviously a certain madame directer had plans for her. Something Kate had to offer the Cabal that their other agent couldn't.
"...And that there's someone else inside, and if I get in their way, more bits lopping. I'd call a bluff but Dana doesn't screw around with this kind of thing."
Why yes, she does refer to the directer by her first name.

"I can't incarcerate you - if there's another mole they'll know about it and you're brother will probably end up as pet food but I'm also not going to let you have free run over the Sanctuary. Regardless of your little sob story, if its even true, I have absolutely no trust in you Kate. You have proved time and time again that you are not acting with any overarcing set of morality - merely on whatever impulses suits you at the time. You could be working for us one day and holding the gun the next."
Which was putting Nikola in an impossible position.
