You could stamp on the end of a knitting needle. Or improvise with a fishhook.

I ended up... not crocheting anything at all. I tended to the lawn instead which I guess is probably for the best.

Yes, crocheting is faster. And crochet hooks aren't that hard to find, though a bit harder if you can't think of a local craft store and your local Wal-Mart is one that's trimmed out the craft section.
