Wow. You really hate Lancelot. I do not. As you know, he's firmly in the Gwen!Harem for me. But as someone who...doesn't put a whole lot of stock into the legends because they're inherently misogynist, I guess I have a little more faith than you do not only for Gwen, but for Lancelot as well. There are other legends where Lancelot doesn't break up a marriage--and even Arthur wasn't a virtue of sainthood in those legends, either--incest, betrayal of other knights, etc, but it's only Gwen (not even Lancelot) who's villified (along with Morgana, Morgause, etc etc etc). So, all that to say, I take the legends with a grain of salt and I'll always appreciate Lancelot for being the first to tell Gwen to her face she's awesome. Not even Arthur in this telling of the legends can lay claim to that.

My hatred of Lancelot pretty much grows every time I see him. I can't explain it, but one thing I forgot to mention last night (which serves me right for trying to be comprehensible when that tired) is how Lancelot uses his "live for me" to Gwen, with the idea that she has to carry his memory with her, whereas Gwen's "live for me" to Arthur is said from a place of pure, selfless love--willing him to live for a future they may never have ( ... )

Actually, I didn't think Lance's "Live for Me" was selfish at all; I thought he meant it the same way Gwen said it later.

Ah, yeah, this is institutional hatred with you regarding Lance. I don't think I'll ever be there, so I guess I can see him more objectively. We'll just agree to disagree on that you are OTP for Arthur/Gwen for everything and I'm OTP for the canon and Gwen's!Harem in fandom! lol

Also, I do like love at first sight sometimes. And I didn't think it was instant--he spent a lot of time with Gwen in that first season. But the basic point is Arthur and Gwen do know each other better, and I do think they fit better. But I'm loving Gwen's!Harem in fandom!

…Now watch the show blow my theory to pieces.

I would hate that, but I also don't think it's going to happen. I have two reasons for this. One, the Lancelot of Merlin is a man of honor. He understands the value of things like loyalty and filial devotion to your king. Medieval-legend Lancelot, on the other hand, places his adulterous love for Guinevere over his loyalty to Arthur, leading to disastrous consequences ( ... )

I love your second point. I agree wholeheartedly with its logic.

See, I love Arthur in every version of the legend I've ever read or watched. The oldest one I've read is Le Morte d'Arthur, which already has the Lancelot/Guinevere romance attached to it, and thus already insures my hatred for them both. But Arthur is always to me the exemplar of what a king should be. And I never really see him as above earthly love--he loves Guinevere, I believe, in every version I've read. He loves Lancelot, too, which is what makes the betrayal even worse, and what makes his loyalties so impossibly divided when he has all his knights and advisers coming to him demanding action be taken. I think I'm especially partial to him because of White's Once and Future King (also the inspiration for Camelot), where he does everything he possibly can to spare them both, even though it tears his kingdom apart.

Basically, I am an unapologetic King Arthur fangirl in any variation of the myth.
