My hatred of Lancelot pretty much grows every time I see him. I can't explain it, but one thing I forgot to mention last night (which serves me right for trying to be comprehensible when that tired) is how Lancelot uses his "live for me" to Gwen, with the idea that she has to carry his memory with her, whereas Gwen's "live for me" to Arthur is said from a place of pure, selfless love--willing him to live for a future they may never have.
Love at first sight just doesn't work for me, in almost any instance, but especially on Merlin, when I contrast it with this slow burn that Arthur & Gwen have. Every time Lancelot shows up and starts spouting about how Gwen has changed him forever, I'm always going YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HER. YOU'VE SPENT FIFTEEN MINUTES IN HER PRESENCE. GROW UP, LOSER. So yes, HATE.
I know the original legends are misogynistic, but I...kind of don't care? I mean, I accept them as a result of the time periods from which they emerge, and there's still a lot to treasure there. Mostly in the person of Arthur, who, whatever his failings (although generally, he doesn't know Morgan le Fay is his sister, and is often enchanted), represents the kind of king a man should aspire to be and emerges from a people's longing to see that kind of king, while they labored under tyrants.
Maybe that's what I cannot get past with Lancelot. My love for Arthur/Gwen may be exclusively new to "Merlin," but my love for Arthur Pendragon goes back to being six years old and watching Sword in the Stone for the first time.
Actually, I didn't think Lance's "Live for Me" was selfish at all; I thought he meant it the same way Gwen said it later.
Ah, yeah, this is institutional hatred with you regarding Lance. I don't think I'll ever be there, so I guess I can see him more objectively. We'll just agree to disagree on that you are OTP for Arthur/Gwen for everything and I'm OTP for the canon and Gwen's!Harem in fandom! lol
Also, I do like love at first sight sometimes. And I didn't think it was instant--he spent a lot of time with Gwen in that first season. But the basic point is Arthur and Gwen do know each other better, and I do think they fit better. But I'm loving Gwen's!Harem in fandom!
