The orange juice thing is a personal experience.

It had been an accident for Fernando to find out. But then he realised to what lengths Dan must have gone to hide this from everyone, to make sure that he was alone when it happened.

The first signs that something was wrong was when Dan had opened his door earlier and instead of the smile he usually welcomed Fernando with, he sported a frown. Admittedly, Fernando hadn't announced his visit ahead, but they were friends, so he didn't think he needed to.

A bit later, Dan had started to alternatively watch the clock and the sky outside, and it was Fernando's turn to frown, because he started to feel really unwelcome.

And then the first rumble of thunder shook the air and Dan all but jumped up, announcing that he was going to make them some tea.

Fernando followed him, a suspicion making room in his head. Dan didn't startle with every clap of thunder that sounded, but his movement seemed jerky and when he actually almost poured orange juice into his cup instead of milk, Fernando gently pried the carton from his fingers and then wrapped an arm around Dan's back.

“Does anyone know?”

“I don't know what you're talking about.” Dan put a spoon into his cup with a bit too much force and started stirring, stirring, stirring.

“Dan.” Fernando made his voice as soft as possible. He could understand that the other man didn't want to admit to any weakness, not in front of a team mate. But Fernando hoped he would tell him as a friend, would know that he was not going to tell anyone.

“My family knows. But no one else.”

“What do you normally do?”

“Put the TV on, turn the volume up. Pace around, read if I can stand to sit down...”

Fernando nodded and pulled on Dan's arm, left the tea abandoned on the kitchen counter and led Dan to the living room, made him sit down on the couch.

He went in search of Dan's headphones and some music, and all the while the Dane didn't say a thing, just let him.

He gently put the headphones over Dan's ears, making sure they covered them completely and the first reaction since the kitchen was to adjust them until he was comfortable. Fernando pulled Dan into his body and then leaned sideways so they could lie down, and he hadn't noticed earlier, but the other man was shaking. He was quite glad he had chosen some calming music although he was quite surprised to discover classical music along the more rocky CDs.

He didn't mind thunderstorms but he had to admit that the loud noises weren't exactly soothing. He couldn't imagine what it must feel like to loath them and go through a thunderstorm alone again and again.

Gradually the tense muscles under his stroking fingers relaxed and the shaking subsided. Fernando wasn't sure if Dan heard anything through his headphones, and he waited a while longer when the claps of thunder only came every other minute or so, quite content to just lie there, but then the tapped them lightly and Dan raised his head and pushed them off.

“Hm?”

“It's over I think. Wasn't that much better than being alone?”

Dan smiled and lay his head back down. He looked exhausted and Fernando suspected that he had still held himself back.

Quite on impulse he moved his head and kissed Dan's temple. For a moment nothing happened, but then the Dane raised himself up on one arm, staring down at Fernando.

“Can I kiss you back?”

Fernando nodded.

The touch of lips was soft, not hesitant but careful. Dan was not in the right frame of mind yet for a bout of passion. But, as the very last rumble of thunder sounded across the sky, Fernando thought, as first kisses go, this one was quite perfect.

weekend, nando, football rps, dan
