He'll Be Less Happy When He Sees Season Three

Saw Iron Man Three. It was okay.

Now, granted, Tony is my second-least favorite Avenger anyway (least favorite being Thor; he's boring), and my favorite parts of the second movie don't involve a regular Iron Man universe character anyway, so you had to figure that would happen. Parts of it made me uncomfortable, parts of it made me laugh ( Read more... )

If I think too hard about the disability!fail, I get veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery angry about IM3. I have an urge to try and write fix-it fic, to give Ellen Brandt (the female minion) some of her own personality back, and also fic where the vice-president's granddaughter is AWESOME, needing a prosthetic leg or no.

But I enjoyed most (not all) of the rest of it, which I was happy about (probably helped that I walked in with the lowest expectations). Tony's...probably my second least fave, too, if I have to rank them (my least is Bruce), but at least this time he was more of a mess than an asshole (and as a bonus, didn't sexually harass his PA! Yay.)

Maya Hansen deserves all of the fic, though. Oh. My. Gosh. Maybe I can fix-it her death. Maybe I can fix-it her death and pair her with Natasha. POSSIBILITIES :D

And, !!!! Michelle Dockery was in it? Where was Michelle Dockery?

Yeah, you've got a point. I didn't even think about the disability!fail (I generally don't, until somebody points it out to me, but I'm working on that). I just really want to know if the Extremis taps into the rage/adrenaline quandary and that's why all of these people had no problems killing everybody like that. Except for Maya Hansen, who was interesting on many levels.

Hahaha, well, Michelle Dockery was in it by proxy, kind of? what I meant to say is that the Marvel Universe now canonically has Downton Abbey in it, which means somewhere in Essex, Michelle Dockery is an actualfax person in the MCU.

- hah, really? To me it was...really, really obvious, right down to Killian's first appearance (of course he has to be SCRUFFY as he limps, he can't possibly own a suit and still limp, nooooooope. Ugh, movie). But difference in perspective! It's a funny thing. And like, I kinda feel like there was a....point to be made about an ableist society creating its demons, that there are so many angry and hurt people who have lost limbs (or have other physical ailments) who feel like (who ARE, in a lot of cases) thrown away, and then Killian comes all with charm and a fix...

But unlike with the Mandarin (which I thought was BRILLIANT commentary and awesome, except for some plot-holes from the first movie I'm trying to fix), if there was a point to which ableism was supposed to be sign as 'bad', it kinda got...lost in how the NARRATIVE was treating everyone who had a physical disability. And also, yeah, that the people who society tends to think of as being 'lesser' were then stripped of their personality...

*hands*

I just really want to ( ... )

Those are very good point about ableism. In truth, isn't that something a lot of comics tackle: the people we ignore/take advantage of/sideline will come be our personal demons? Hell, that's the entire plot of The Incredibles, with Syndrome ( ... )

The function of Extremis isn't actually a rage thing... it's a self-control thing. And the initial point of reprogramming everything with Extremis starts in the brain. The most basic function of Extremis was to ramp up the metabolism to generate new cells...getting the body to function better at it's BASE was the only 'programming' AIM figured out how to develop. The human body generates a HUGE amount of waste heat in the metabolism process...Extremis just ramps it up beyond levels the body would normally tolerate. It was the soldier 'subjects' that got the euphoria and weaponizing out of the project. Not to mention the thought of what happens when you put highly trained military personnel and suddenly make them almost unstoppable ( ... )

Ohh okay. Thanks for the explanation. My sister mentioned some of it to me on the way home, but neither of actually likes comics all that much (they fall into video game territory for me: I either want everything done for me with a story-like a movie with moving picture, sound, and etc.-or nothing, which basically means words on a page and let my imagination go wild), so we were trying to piece together what we knew from internet osmosis and the like. That's interesting about the regulating. Maybe, though, I'll check out the Warren Ellis comic. I know copperbadge mentioned things he was sad that got dropped from the Extremis storyline.

And I'm just going to come out and say it now, damn the consequences: I liked the exploding soldiers storyline better on Fringe.

Agreed with you on the POI finale. That was such a damn fine episode. I'm about to go write up my recap of it for Nice Girls and I'm excited to revisit. Sarah Shahi as Shaw on POI and Dana Delany as Shaw on Castle have successfully taken back the name Shaw for me. Whew. The machine ( ... )

I liked that Pepper got to confront Killian (even if she kind of takes a dozen levels in physical badass for that final scene - or else Extremis bestows sudden and high-level military ops training), and that Rhodey got to be awesome. Overall, the movie was pretty enjoyable for me, not a snoozefest, some good characterisation and development of People Who Aren't Tony Stark, and an interesting take on the 'super soldier' concept.

I didn't notice the ableism fail, but I can see it now it's pointed out. :/

And it's interesting to see Jonathon Nash's comment about Extremis in comics continuity, since all we really get in the movie is: "physical healing" and "explosive bombs".

Yeah, when Tony blew up Killian in the suit, I was upset because I wanted Pepper to be the one to end the son of a bitch, and I was happy when she was. My take on it is that her brain got enhanced or maybe she's been taking some serious self-defense lessons (the fact that Pepper doesn't have a bodyguard is actually one thing that really confuses me). But you're right, there was a lot of development of non-Tony characters. I'm still sorting out how I feel about Pepper. Truth is, I had one hope for the film and I'm realizing it was a silly hope to have because it would have been out of character. I just wanted more Pepper on a rampage or out to kick ass, and I realize that that's not really her character. She'll step up when it's necessary, but she's not martially minded like that ( ... )

Well, sound like it's a good thing that I don't have any expectations when it comes to Iron Man 3. I'll be going to see the movie with a friend who I don't see that often anymore so it's more about hanging out an doing stuff with her than actually about which movie we will be watching. However, Whedon-style humor sounds great. ;)

I can see where it's an enjoyable film and everything, and in a couple of years, if I see it on TV, I'd stop and watch for a few minutes before moving onto the next thing, you know? I'm glad you're getting to see it with your friend! I get to see two of my friends once every coupe of months and we usually catch a movie-which is always exciting because our tastes are very different, or I'll end up laughing through a serious movie or something.

I swear, you can't take me anywhere. :)
