and I loved her fiercely

Popslashers! Awesome August signups are now open, yay! Many fine days still available for the choosing. It's a beautiful day for baseball.

Also, in better-living-through-fandom news, Tiger Beatdown wonders whether we have heard of Hypatia. WHY YES, I HAVE. Also, I really want to go see that movie.

Agora is a really good film. For the sets and costumes alone, but the acting is good too. It has significant structural problems, but they are lack of really - it would've made an amazing six hour miniseries.

okay and that article quoted is not as mysogynistic - it is more complicated than that, and the movie glosses over stuff! I would have liked to have them show her as woman in her fifties, but the film compresses everything, including a lot of religious and intellectual grey.

I guess that is the way of movies, to compress stuff into a given running time. I'm bummed that I missed this when it was in theaters, I'll have to try and find it another way.

I agree with all of the above; gorgeous production values, perfectly acceptable acting, not a lot of subtlety. And yes, I also longed to see this as a miniseries on HBO, say, the better to explain the religious/political intrigue and especially the scientific concepts.

I am super intrigued! Sadly it looks like I've missed it in the theaters. I'll have to see if I can catch up on it on a small screen.
