We went to Maui when we were out there years back. Personally, I found it kinda dull - if you're not one to want to lie around on the beach all day (which I'm not, especially when I realized I was getting back from vacation 2 days before the Spring semester started).

We did drive up Haleakala volcano. We started to do part of the road to Hana, but I was getting very car sick, so we turned around and headed back.

Mike had family living on the Big Island, and they claimed it was the most beautiful of all the islands. They said it was the often overlooked island because everyone is so intent on going to Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.

While on Maui, I intend to get to Hana, and stop by my active lava flows on my way there. I want to get out to the red sand beach there too. :-)

I'm leaning toward the Big Island. There's plenty to do there, including white, black and green sand beaches. I don't need to spend lots of time swimming or sunbathing at any of these, but I do want to see them and get some snorkeling in with turtles and other colorful aquatic life.

There's also a bit of climbing and a mountain that is known for it's astronomical viewing. So I believe I'll spend an evening getting up there, watching the sunset and doing some star gazing.

Now I'm waiting to hear back from my sister about where she went while in Hawaii a number of years ago and what suggestions she has.
