Any fantasy recommendations?

Feb 14, 2012 21:11

My tastes in fantasy run in the likes of Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy and GRRM - A Song of Ice and Fire... any recommendations of fantasy novels (or series!) out there that I can read next?

Please don't recommend:

- YA stuff
- Anything that's basically taking the LOTR template and runs with it

recommendations, books: fantasy, books: recommendations, books

Okay, feel free to reject this, but when you said nothing that takes the LOTR template I thought of Jacqueline Carey's Banewreaker books, which is basically LOTR from the point of view of the bad guys, and imho, makes the good guys look like shits. Maybe that's why I liked it so much:)

(Also I can't remember if you hated Carey's Kushiel series or not.)

Heh, I'll look it up *G*.

Kushiel... I didn't really hate it, I just had a *very* hard time getting into it, so I gave up. Not bad from the concept, but me and the writing style just didn't mix.

Understandable, but the good news is that the other series is written in a very different style.

Oh, have you read Flewelling's Nightrunner books?

The Wraeththu Chronicles. First trilogy though, I liked that one better than the second.

Already read! Didn't make it all the way through the second trilogy, but I read as far as I could *G*.

Good recommendation, though *G*

Good for you ^^

And some Neil Gaiman can never hurt either btw. That man is like Tim Burton for books.

Brent week's night angel trilogy. It's about assassins!

It sounds good!

Though his "Black Prism" (or so) book sounds even better! *G*

Robin Hobb's Assassin/Liveship/Fool trilogies, in that order. They're all interconnected.

I second the recommendation of Robin Hobb's Assassin series--really enjoyed those.

Currently I'm reading the Blood Jewels series by Anne Bishop. Rather dark stuff, but I'm rather liking it.

Have you read Mercedes Lackey already?

cool! I personally recommend her Last Herald Mage trilogy which I think was her best, althought I warn you she's a little heavy on the teenage angst at first. But the main character is gay, so that's a plus. *g*

:) Okay! I'll try to ignore the teenage angst *G*. Which, really, is something that puts me off a bit. But I'll check them out. I think between this post and the post on Dreamwidth, I got enough recommendations to last me the next few years until Winds of Winter. *G*
