But you're right of course. It is very very confusing at first. But the worst thing ever? How many of them. One? Or two? Or... three??? Basically one if you're friends of sorts and first meet. Two if you say bye for the day, and three if you're close friends and meet / say good-bye for long.
Can't say I am comfortable with it, but I accept it as one of those things you don't need to fully understand to do. :-) Feels nice, too, even the smacking lips thing *giggle*

For us, it was embarrassing only in the beginning. Then, I remarked this not-touching-the-cheek detail and told it to my daughter. Who, sweetheart, had kissed everybody, absolute strangers for her, fully with the lips, like she does with me. I felt it was a little trial for her. Well, tradition is tradition. After I have told her how to do it, it became a favorite joke between us: “Embrasse-moi a la francaise !” Then we make a loud SOUND of a smack touching one another only slightly cheek-by-cheek.What disappointment! It makes us laugh.
