The French Kiss

The French kiss each other each time they meet. Often, even when they meet for the first time. On the cheek, of course. It is nothing more than a tradition, right? Every French learner knows it. Many people of other countries do not - physically - understand it, nor accept it. For me, it never ceased to be a matter of a slight misunderstanding. Of ( Read more... )

Come off it. Not hypocritical. Funny. (You should have seen one of my Russian friends do it. LOL. He puts out his lips so that he looks like a little calf :-) )

But you're right of course. It is very very confusing at first. But the worst thing ever? How many of them. One? Or two? Or... three??? Basically one if you're friends of sorts and first meet. Two if you say bye for the day, and three if you're close friends and meet / say good-bye for long.

Can't say I am comfortable with it, but I accept it as one of those things you don't need to fully understand to do. :-) Feels nice, too, even the smacking lips thing *giggle*

Je sais que ce n'est pas hypocryte I know that it's not hypocritical, far from it. On the contrary, this smack does mean that the person intends to be very friendly with you. Otherwise, they do without kisses very easily.
For us, it was embarrassing only in the beginning. Then, I remarked this not-touching-the-cheek detail and told it to my daughter. Who, sweetheart, had kissed everybody, absolute strangers for her, fully with the lips, like she does with me. I felt it was a little trial for her. Well, tradition is tradition. After I have told her how to do it, it became a favorite joke between us: “Embrasse-moi a la francaise !” Then we make a loud SOUND of a smack touching one another only slightly cheek-by-cheek.What disappointment! It makes us laugh.

"You have seen it done often in the movies and probably on the street in darkened corners. The French kiss is a timeless and passionate gesture of romantic affection. Whether you live in Paris, France, or Paris, Texas, you can learn how to kiss like the French do without an embarrassing faux pas!"... Picked up on Wikihow site ( ... )

I've been also told that what is called “the French kiss” is something exaggerated, exactly: like in movies :-)) By “something” I mean a normal kiss between lovers, a human or rather animal-like gesture - it depends on persons and their feelings. It's purely individual, and I do believe that what is known as the “French kiss” - it is meant to be more sexy than all the others - is nothing more than a myth. No normal person has the possibility to learn to do it! :))) Unless you try to kiss hundreds of French to investigate this matter. So - thank you, Hollywood!! LOL ( ... )
